"The Oil King"

Sept. 1999

Year photo taken: 1962/3

Where:  At anchor off the Silver Strand, Coronado, CA

Additional information: If I recall correctly (It's been over 35 years now after all.) somehow the fuel hose got out of control while refueling at sea and covered the hull almost full length in fuel oil. The Captain ( His name was Hogshead (sp?) and he was a full Commander.) refused to enter the harbor with the Eddy in such a sorry state and anchored us just outside of the entrance to San Diego harbor while cleanup was affected. If memory serves the crew was upset because it was a Friday and liberty call was delayed. I'm not sure why the snipes were held responsible.

Fair winds and smooth seas,

Mike Sponsky
